About

Stories that connect. Magic that lasts.

The Black Forest Film Festival brings international cinema to the heart of Europe – to the Black Forest, to Freiburg and across the region.

Here, atmosphere, style and allure meet stories that weave the magical and the past, create the new or reveal the personal.

With its unique story market, an international competition, industry gatherings and outstanding events, the Black Forest Film Festival is more than a festival:
it is a stage where unforgettable stories come to life – mysterious, radiant, unmistakable, like the Black Forest itself.

Who we are

Behind the Black Forest Film Festival is a dedicated team of experienced film professionals, cultural managers and creative minds.

We live and breathe cinema – and work with professionalism and passion to create a festival that inspires, connects and leaves a lasting impression.

Anna-Katharina Gerson

Anna-Katharina Gerson is an art and film historian with over 25 years of experience in the European cultural and media sector. For over ten years, she was programme and festival director of the B3 Festival of the Moving Image in Frankfurt, both curatorially and organisationally, and prior to that she conceived the film and media section of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Her focus is on cross-media formats at the intersection of film, literature, art and immersive technologies such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence. She has many years of experience working with national and international institutions – from the Berlinale to Creative Europe, from film funding organisations to cultural foundations and state ministries. Her eye for narrative forms and cultural developments was shaped not least by her origins in a cinema family in the Black Forest.
