Film Programme

Between fairy tales, myths and modern cinema

The Black Forest Film Festival 2025 spans a wide spectrum – from modern fairy tales and psychological dramas to fantastic and darker visions. It features German and European premieres alongside historic films connected to the Black Forest, bridging cinematic heritage and the present day.

Premieres & Competition
At the core are new international productions – films between reality and imagination, exploring identity, transformation, memory and humanity’s bond with nature. The competition highlights emerging voices as well as established filmmakers.

Classics with a Black Forest Connection
Restored versions of The Cold Heart and The Black Forest Girl showcase two cinematic milestones that shaped the region’s image on film. Expert talks and introductions offer cultural and historical context.

Retrospective: Margarethe von Trotta
A highlight of the festival, this retrospective honours our patron Margarethe von Trotta. Screenings include Hannah Arendt, Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey into the Desert, Sisters and The Balance of Happiness – films of striking honesty about memory, responsibility and self-determination.

Musical Visions & Film History
To mark its 50th anniversary, the festival presents Tommy by The Who – a cult rock opera and milestone of pop culture. The screening is introduced by Adrian Wootton, CEO of Film London, who offers insights into its making and cultural legacy.

Talks, Q&As & Encounters
Most screenings are accompanied by filmmaker talks and Q&As – opportunities to engage directly with directors, writers and producers.
